The Legend That is Steve Gilroy
Craft Beer and micro brewing in South Africa is not a new
art form. Many people have been at it for years, perfecting their recipes and
finding one that can stand the test of time as well as the test of other
breweries. There are many big names that stand out in the global and local craft
beer scene but none like Steve Gilroy’s, Or Gilly’s, as some people call him. He has been brewing for over 40 years and his challenge still stands to any other brewer to make a beer that can better his, (Hence the Gauntlet in his crest ) Now whether you’re a home brewer, own your own brewery or, just an avid fan of the great and pure beers that we call Craft beer, you are sure to have heard of Gilroy’s Beer. If not Then Listen up! Gilroy’s beer is ranked 3rd in
the world and the best in South Africa. Not so bad for a beer that comes from
the ass end of the ass end of the ass end of the world (as Steve puts it).
These beers are a definite MUSTY TRY and once tried you’ll soon be buying a lot more.
The beer is perfect for a nice warm summer afternoon or even a chill winter one
too! Be it a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or even our reason to drink, Mondays,
this beer will be enjoyed till every last sip, except the last (because that
means it’s finished).
Gilroy's have an array of beers to suit your thirst.
The beers
range from Premium Lager (4% Golden
Lager), a traditional European Rheinheitsgebot styled lager that is clear and gold, any lager lover will become a Gilroy's Lager enthusiast after drinking this. The Favourite (4% Pale
Ale), aptly named as it is the favourite of all the beers and adored by many, best enjoyed as a fruity summer beer that leaves a delicious caramelised sugar/molasses taste dancing on the pallet. Next Traditional (4.5% Red
Irish Ale), this ruby Gem is a one-of-a-kind beer and is definitely so simple yet so delicious and palatable. Lastly the Serious
(5.5% Royal Dark Ale), this beer does not play games and a few drafts of these will bring you down a peg or two, it has a darker more bold taste than the rest but does not make your mouth feel as if you licked a burnt log. All these beers are all natural (the way the
Good (Irish) Lord himself intended), Meaning they have no preservatives. They’re low/
naturally carbonated and leave the sweetest tastes in your mouth. My favourites
are the Lager, The Favourite, The Traditional and The Serious. (To get a full
description of the beers follow the links at the end of the article.)
Gilroy’s does offer a “Beer Experience”, this is probably
the greatest thing any beer lover can attend! When in the Muldersdrift are, or
even if you live far away, you must phone and book for the beer experience. You
will learn the MANY health benefits of beer as well as what the meaning of the
Gilroy family shield means, and you will learn to imbibe and immerse yourself
in the golden, as well as pale, red, and
royal dark nectar. The atmosphere at the
restaurant/Brewpub is like no other. With live bands and lots of atmosphere and
“Gees”, (The Afrikaans term). Gilroy’s is one the best places to hang out, have
a couple beers and have the best food. On the weekends you get to see Steve
Gilroy himself recite a poem of his own creation, which is then concluded by
the traditional salute of Middle fingers raised high, full glasses higher and
an exclamation of “UP YOURS!”
So in the wise words of the Legend himself.
UP YOURS!
